Insurance Commissioner Kipper releases consumer protection PSAs Television, radio spots to air in June

05/29/09 - CARSON CITY, Nev. - Nevada Insurance Commissioner Scott J. Kipper has released three public service announcements to air on television and radio stations across the state beginning in June.

The PSAs bring to light some important issues regarding insurance, and provide a brief education for consumers in terms of wildfire and disaster preparation as well as the insurance issues surrounding long-term care.

“Foremost, the Division of Insurance is a consumer protection agency, so anything we can do in the way of public education is something I’m very passionate about,” Commissioner Kipper said.

Television spots regarding disaster preparedness and long-term care were produced in February by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The radio announcements, which focus on wildfire preparedness, were produced in both English and Spanish through a partnership with the Nevada Broadcaster’s Association.

Commissioner Kipper hopes these radio spots will encourage consumers to prepare themselves for the threat of wildfires by reviewing their insurance policies and creating a home inventory of personal items. This way, if consumers are affected by a fire, they can take steps to protect the assets they have worked so hard to obtain.

“Wildfires and other disasters such as floods and earthquakes are a reality we have to live with as Nevadans,” Commissioner Kipper said. “The better informed we are, the better prepared we will be to meet the challenges these situations present.”

The Commissioner is no stranger to natural disasters. Working as a deputy commissioner in charge of the Office of Health Insurance in Louisiana, Commissioner Kipper saw first hand the devastating effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and led the development and implementation of emergency rules following these disasters.

“Disasters strike everywhere in the U.S.,” Commissioner Kipper said. “It’s always a good idea to make sure your insurance needs are in order, especially homeowners or renter’s policies.”
